Famous for Timbertown, Wauchope, Warhope, Warchoppee, however you spell or say it, is Little Munch's home town. As you probably have gathered by now, Little Munch is a country bird. I grew up on a farm outside of Wauchope and hence all of the farm like references I use. I flew the coop when I was 18 and moved to the big smoke where my addiction began........
My cafe addiction that is. Now when I was living in Wauchope the cafe scene was limited, VERY limited. I have a vivid recollection of coming home from Sydney on Uni holidays and ordering a cappuccino at one of the said limited cafes and much to my horror I saw the "barista" make a cup of Instant Roast coffee and then add a dash of frothed hot milk on top with a sprinkle of cocoa powder!
Thankfully those days have changed and like so many quaint country towns, Wauchope now has some seriously good cafes, the town is actually almost overflowing with cafes. The biggest and the best cafe is Watermans, and by the way, it is seriously the most child friendly cafe on the mid north coast. Watermans is located in Bain Park which has a huge enclosed playground, a designated scooter track and plenty of green grass to run around, kick a ball or chase birds. If you sit on the verandah of Watermans you can easily see your progeny playing safely in the park. You can also sit in the spacious inside but your view will be limited of the playground. However there is loads of space for your pram and loads of high chairs for little bottoms to sit on.
The kids menu at Watermans is impressive. They have a breakfast, lunch/dinner and drinks menu especially for children. I have been to very few cafes in Sydney that have such a dedicated menu and I believe it is quite reasonably priced.
We were at Watermans for morning tea on a Sunday and there was only one thing on the little bull's minds - cupcakes! You walk straight past the cake cabinet as you enter Watermans and it is located at the perfect level for little eyes, so you may find it a wee bit difficult to persuade your kids at breakfast, lunch or dinner time to eat something else - cause look how cute the cupcakes are:
Of course the little bulls only ate the icing off the cupcakes (I think Poppy bull ate the rest of the cakes as country people hate seeing anything going to waste!). Now Waterman's babycino is fairly average for 2 bucks but the mini milkshake comes with a cute addition of a snake; it's the little touches that count, don't you think?
Don't worry the sweet treats for adults are just as delicious. I think most of our table indulged in freshly made mini lemon meringue tarts and let me tell you the coffee at Watermans gives some cafes in Sydney a run for their money.
There was a real buzz in Watermans when we were there. The place was packed to the rafters when we arrived. Full of families after Sunday morning Mass, day trippers from next door Port Macquarie and young couples...who probably should have been at Mass!
Watermans is not just a child friendly cafe, it is also a kind of gourmet grocer, selling a lot of their own home made products. You can purchase their preserves, sauces, biscuits and even vanilla bean sugar to name but a few. Clearly they are aiming to put Wauchope on the gourmet foodie trail, as the whole area is burgeoning with awesome produce and wine.
I strongly suggest that next time you are after a holiday destination that you consider Wauchope, as there as loads of things to see and do. A little post will be appearing on Little Explore in the coming weeks as to what a fantastic family holiday spot it is and of course you can get your daily caffeine fix at Watermans.
This country bird is loving going back to her home town and seeing it flourish. It's also a relief to see that the only Instant Roast coffee to be found is on the bottom shelf at the local supermarket - where it should be x
