I get very excited when I find child friendly cafes surfing the net. Especially when those child friendly cafes have a website with a whole section dedicated to kids! I can say that very few eating establishments do this, but one cafe that does, is The Village Emporium in Wamberal on the Central Coast. I just knew that we had to visit The Village Emporium to see if they lived up to the Little Munch standard of a child friendly cafe. So we packed the kids into Harry Hyundai and hooned up to the Central Coast on a sunny Sunday.
Now let me tell you The Village Emporium passed Little Munch's strict standards easily! Perhaps that had to do with the uber friendly owner greeting us as soon as we walked in the door. Perhaps it had to do with the box of toys available for kids to play with or the baby change table located in the large toilet. Basically The Village Emporium ticks most of the boxes when it comes to being a child friendly cafe.
The Emporium is located on the very busy The Entrance Road. However it is set back from the road in a little strip of shops. Look out for the black and white building with black Dane's coffee umbrellas outside. It's the perfect spot to drop into on your way to or from the beach. Wamberal is only a bit over an hour north of Sydney (depending on where you live) so it is the perfect little day trip from Sydney.
The Village Emporium is both cafe and grocer. As soon as you walk in you are drawn to the cake display unit and the row of large glass jars full of the most delicious looking cookies. There is also a cabinet full of very nice looking savoury items as well. Have a quick squizz at it all than go and take seat in spacious cafe and have a peruse of the yummy menu. You can of course sit outside but I would recommend if you have the kiddliwinks in tow, that you sit down the back of the cafe cause that's where the box of toys is.
The menu is divided into "Brunch All Day" and "Before Midday" and "After Midday." You are spoilt for choice! There isn't a kid's menu but there are loads of options in both the front cabinet and on the menu that kids can easily eat. Prices are from about $4.00 - $17.00 depending on whether you are after a sweet treat or a full on meal. They are also open on Friday and Saturday evenings when it's pizza time!
We arrived in time for afternoon tea and we couldn't go past the cake cabinet - it all looked so good! There is a big emphasis on seriously yummy gluten free options at The Village Emporium. We had a lime cheesecake tart with a ginger nut base, it was completely heavenly and completely gluten free; and a berry cheesecake which was luscious and smooth. These were washed down with seriously good Dane's coffees.
The little bulls weren't very keen on sampling anything from the cake cabinet or cookie jars they just wanted ice cream! The lovely owner said he could plate some up for us or we could pop down to the take away shop and buy some icy poles and bring them back - such excellent customer service. Not many businesses allow customers to bring in food from other establishments to eat in theirs.
There is loads of space for your prams inside The Village Emporium. The interior is decked out in a trendy red, black and white theme. There are shelves full of coffee, oils, bikkies and more, for you to purchase to take home as well as some knick knacks and clothes. As I said before there is a large loo with a baby change table and there are also high chairs available for your bub. There is cute mural on the wall depicting kids on a swing that adds to the child friendliness of the cafe.
If your kids are demanding some playground time make sure your check out Wamberal Park on Wairakei Rd which is about 5 minutes around the corner. It's a great big park with a flying fox, climbing ropes, exercise equipment, picnic area and the usual swings/slides etc.
So dear parents if you feeling like heading to the coast this weekend, why not go up to Wamberal, check out this lovely little kid friendly cafe, and then go for a dip in the beautiful Pacific x
