I remember my first Mother's Group meeting so very clearly - we went to the bowlo for lunch after a meeting at the local baby clinic. Everyone ordered a lemonade, I commented that we all actually needed wine to cope with what we were dealing with, and the look of horror I received from my new Mummy's Group made me realise pretty quickly that I had fallen in with the wrong crowd. So I ordered a coffee instead. Sadly my mummy brain drain hadn't quite joined the dots that ordering a flat white in a suburban bowling club in the year 2008 was a seriously bad idea, and yes that coffee was bad, real bad.
But it got me thinking, (it even laid the seed for the Little Munch concept), where could we go as a big Mother's group where we didn't have to be content with a crap coffee and breastfeed our babies in front of the slightly embarrassed local bowling fraternity. And I came up with nix - there was nothing close by where we could all fit with our babies, breasts and beasts of prams. Fast forward 6 odd years and I now know of dozens of cafes, just like my latest discovery - The Good Food Depot in Yagoona. This is one lovely spacious cafe that can fit loads of parents and prams. And the best bit is that they have a cute play area for those of you who have little kids that need occupying.
The Good Food Depot is located in a business park on the very busy Rookwood Road. Once you have scored a car spot, it is easy to access the cafe with your pram - just make sure you enter through the door on the left as you are facing the cafe from the car park. There are loads of kid friendly features at The Good Food Depot which include high chairs; a baby change table in the bathroom (complete with nappy change bags and wipes in case you have forgotten them); kids menu; plastic plates and cutlery for kidlets food to be served on; and lastly you receive a free babycino with every coffee purchase!
Now you can choose to sit inside or out at The Good Food Depot. Inside is where the play area is and up the other end of the cafe from this, there is a nice lounge area in one corner. However I'm thinking that the outdoor area may be a better spot to sit if there is a large group of you with prams. The owners have decorated the outdoor space with loads of lush plants and there is a grassy area where kids can wander around (just keep a close eye on them because the road is close by). And if you have a fur baby you can even bring it along as they are dog friendly too!
Lets move on to the food. You order and pay at the front counter - the menu is up on a board and they also have specials of the day in the hot food counter. They have a simple kids menu and if the choices don't take your little ones fancy, then you can order them a sambo from the sandwich bar. For those of us with more mature taste buds, I thoroughly recommend the falafelicious wrap! There are so many zingy flavours in this wrap that is packed full of falafel and pickled vegies. Some other examples on the menu are schnitzel wraps, steak sandwiches, juicy looking burgers, fish & chips, sandwiches of your choice etc etc.
Now if you are at The Good Food Depot for breakfast (which is served Mon - Sat) you can indulge in Bacon & Egg Rolls, Muesli Jars and their Big Breakfast only costs $13.00!! Plus on Saturday mornings they have live music playing. Coffee is by a brand I am unfamiliar with - King Carlos Coffee, and as I mentioned earlier, babycinos are free with every purchase!
So what cafes do you hang out with your Mother's Group Little Munchers? What about the Dads - any Little Munchers who have a specific Dad's Group that they meet up with?
