Sometimes kids just don't need all of the bells and whistles of a full on child friendly cafe, they just need a cake cabinet to drool over! It's all about the baked goods and actually the damn fine breakfast at this place! And this place is St Honore Bakery in Edgecliff. There are two other St Honore Bakeries in Sydney - the original store is in Nth Sydney and the third is in Mosman. I was a regular of St Honore Bakery in North Sydney for many years when I worked down the road from the store. It was my go to place for a caffeine fix, a birthday cake for a member of staff or a sweet treat for Mr Munch when I was trying to impress him back in our courting days!
St Honore Bakery, as the name may suggest, is a bakery specialising in French bakery and patisserie items. The Edgecliff branch is located in the front of the Eastpoint Food Fair. There is loads of under cover parking and access to the shopping centre is via lift or escalators. When we arrived we were warmly greeted by the staff - I think they were glad to have someone to serve as there wasn't a soul in the place. You can choose to sit inside or out and as it was a warm day we chose the air conditioned interior. There was a toddler amongst us and when we asked for a high chair to restrain him from toddling off we were met with a blank stare - they don't have them and obviously haven't been asked for one before which I find quite strange.
So he did toddle off, with my boys following him closely and I think the three of them left their little paw prints over every glass fronted cake cabinet in the place, as they tried to decide what they were going to eat next! (Just to let you know, whilst the boys loved the look of the cake cabinets, I believe that they are no where as impressive as the ones in the North Sydney store). My boys rubbed their hands in glee when they discovered the plentiful pain au chocolats and they were quickly ordered along with kids size milkshakes (and of course they stole the sweet little bikkies that came with all of the adults coffees).
There isn't a dedicated kids menu but you won't have any issue finding something for your babes to munch on. Adults can obviously choose a divine baked good as well or if you are in need of something more hearty you can choose off the delicious breakfast menu. Some of the tempting items are corn fritters with chorizo, eggs benedict sliders, chorizo and goats cheese omelette, bacon and egg roll on a brioche bun and of course there is a croque monsieur! They were all simply divine and not too badly priced with most items hovering around the $15 mark.
If you find yourself at St Honore at lunch time, make sure you try one of their pies - they are to die for! The pastry is golden and flaky and the pie fillings cover everything from a basic beef to a gourmet beef bourguignon. The chunks of meat are beautifully cooked and there is loads of it. Quiches, salads and other tasty delights are also on offer. Obviously if you arrive mid morning or afternoon there are a large number of sweet treats available to have with your coffee - and the coffee is really good!
After your kidlets have drooled (literally) over all of the cake cabinets, you may find them becoming quite restless as there aren't any activities to keep them occupied. So make sure you pack some colouring in if you are planning on having a leisurely breakfast, otherwise your coffee will go cold as you find yourself chasing your little darlings all over the shopping centre. If you require the loo facilities you will also find these out in the shopping centre.
After breakfast we stocked on up on St Honore's delicious sourdough bread and a couple of sweet treats for the kidlets and toddled off after the toddler on an explore of the Eastpoint Food Fair. St Honore was still really quiet when we left but then again we arrived bright and early, so if you have early risers like we do, this is the perfect spot for breakfast as they open at 7am every day.
So tell me dear Little Munchers, what is your family's favourite bakery in Sydney and why?
