I review loads of cafes that are child friendly in Sydney but not many restaurants. Restaurants are the home of long lunches and lovely dinners and sometimes that means that they aren't that child friendly. Then you have restaurants like the very kid friendly Restaurant 317. Restaurant 317 in down town Parramatta has just become Little Munch' new favourite...
A couple of weeks ago on a Saturday we were wandering down Eat Street (Church St) trying to decide where to go for lunch. Mr Munch all of sudden announced that he wanted seafood. I thought he was being a bit bonkers because to me, seafood and Parramatta don't really go hand in hand. But then he spied the words "Oyster Bar" and before I knew it we were sitting outside Restaurant 317.
Restaurant 317 occupies two different buildings with a lane way running between the two buildings, aptly named Oyster Lane. One building is home to the Oyster Bar and the other is home to an upmarket style of restaurant. There is outdoor seating in Oyster Lane as well as out the front of both buildings on Church Street. What I'm trying to get at here is that there is loads of seating and there are tables to fit all sizes and styles of families. Pram access is easy and there is a car park right behind the buildings which is accessed via Oyster Lane.
At the back of the restaurant there is a very stylish toilet which contains a baby change table (I do so love a posh loo!). High chairs are in plentiful supply and to make this fantastic restaurant even more child friendly, on Sundays they provide free face painting and animal balloons from 12pm - 4pm, to keep your kidlets occupied at lunch time (long lazy Sunday lunches just got a little easier).
The menu at Restaurant 317 is huge. Check out the menu here. They do indeed serve seafood as well as steaks, pastas, pizzas, salads, and meat in so many different forms. They are renowned for their gluten free menu as well, so for those of you who have gluten intolerance or who may have bambinos with the intolerance, this is the place for you!
The kids menu is a decent size and it includes pizza, pasta, risotto, and calamari/fish/schnitzel with chips. You can substitute mash potato or seasonal vegetables for the chips if you want to be a bit healthier. All kids meals cost $10.90 and the price includes a kids size soft drink that is sensibly served in a disposable cup with a lid and straw (big tick). Our little dudes had a pizza each and they were huge, so if you have small eaters they may be able to share a pizza. Restaurant 317 scores another big tick for serving the kids meals extra quick. Service was exceptional throughout our entire time at 317.
Mr Munch and I had some garlic bread to start and then splurged on a cold seafood platter and it was spectacular. Prawns, oysters, lobster, bugs and smoked salmon with loads of different sauces. So if you want to spoil someone in your life order this meal! BUT maybe sit on a table inside. We were sitting right on the pavement where everyone walks past and passer-bys were enviously eyeing off our prawnies - I was worried that someone was going to flog one!
If you are celebrating a special occasion, Restaurant 317 has an extensive drinks list with loads of delicious sounding mocktails for all of you pregnant Mummas out there. I hated going out for a lovely meal when I was growing my babe and only having the choice of mineral water or a soft drink.
I could really go on and on about Restaurant 317, but I'm not going to because you need to get yourself there ASAP! Take the kids or leave them at home, up to you. Also if you are stuck for somewhere to take Dad on Daddy's Day, then I highly recommend booking 317 NOW x
