Plonk! beach cafe - Mosman

I know how child friendly a cafe is by how often I am annoyed by my children whilst dining. If I'm constantly pestered with remarks that they are bored or hungry, I know that I haven't chosen an establishment particularly well. However if I don't see my children the whole time that I am eating out, then I know I have chosen particularly well - just like I did last holiday Monday at Plonk!

Plonk! beach cafe is a gorgeous waterside cafe located at the Spit bridge in Mosman. From the cafe you have a birds eye view of the bridge opening and all of the yachts sailing underneath it. Being this close to the water also means that Plonk have their very own little beach and this is why I didn't hear a peep out of the little bulls the whole time we were at Plonk - they were playing happily in the sand and madly splashing like only little boys can in the water.

All sorts of people converge on Plonk. Primarily your salty dogs who wander in straight from their yachts or kayaks that they have moored close by. There are also loads of young families, ladies who lunch and and the odd infamous Australian, one of whom decided to plonk himself down on the table in front of us causing me to put away my camera in case he thought I was the papz! Hence why there is only one interior shot.

From our seat we had a reasonable view of the beach where the boys were playing, when they disappeared out of view we just popped out to make sure they were ok. If you aren't as cavalier as we are, then request a table right by the beach when you make your booking. And you do need to make a booking as Plonk is one very popular cafe.

Plonk provide a large container full of buckets and spades as well as a footy and a few other things for kids to play with on the beach. The boys had great fun building castles, digging holes and seeing how wet they could get. The water is shallow and protected as Plonk is located on a marina where loads of flash looking boats are moored. It's probably a good idea to bring a change of clothes for your little ones. My guys were saturated (didn't think to dress them in their cossies did I). There are loos available where you can change your kids, or just do it on the beach - there is a very laid back vibe around here.

We had to cajole the boys in from the beach to have their yummy breakfast. Freshly made pancakes ($10) were the order of the day, served with ice cream and maple syrup. They were happily devoured by the little bulls in record time so that they could head back to the beach. There is also toast and spreads available for your kiddliwinks at $7.00. Milkshakes, juices, babycinos and table water are all available for your little ones to drink.

At lunch time Plonk has a kids menu that comprises of grilled chicken breast, fish and steak all served with chips ($14) and ice cream and topping for dessert ($5). The breakfast menu for adults is simply scrumptious and it ranges in price from $7.00 - $20.00.

We had the smoked salmon and basil pesto scrambled eggs with sourdough toast as well as the sautéed mushrooms and goats cheese on sourdough toast. Both dishes were huge and full of flavour. At lunch and dinner time you can munch on a bucket of prawns ($20) all the way up to a fabulous seafood platter for two ($120.00). They do serve fancy sandwich type options at lunch time if you are after something light and some delicious sounding desserts. Plonk is fully licensed as well - so it's the perfect place for a boozy long lunch whilst the kids play at the beach - you just need to hitch a ride on someone's boat so you can arrive in style!

I should comment here on the brilliant service we received at Plonk. From the moment we arrived to the time we departed, service was friendly fast and efficient. They get really busy at Plonk but this didn't seem to faze the staff at all. They happily dodged wet children running in off the beach as well as meeting every request that some of their fussier diners were requesting.

Parking is at a premium here on weekends and Mosman council charge you a premium to park so bring a decent amount of coin with you! If your kiddliwinks still need some entertaining after their time at the beach (and you still have time left on the meter) then grab a take away coffee from Plonk and head across the road as there is an enclosed pirate park playground.

We could have happily plonked ourselves down all day at Plonk. I loved the beach side vibe - boardshorts and sandy toes were de riguer. The fact that the little bulls didn't disturb us once was brilliant and then there was the food, the service, the view, the people watching.....ahh dining bliss x
