I love discovering little hidden gems. Cafes that aren't located in the hipster belt or in the well trodden family suburbs. Little places that normally only locals know about. Little places that serve amazing coffee and yummy food just like Next Door by Schibello in semi industrial Rhodes.
I found this little gem by complete accident one day when I was lost, trying to find Ikea in Rhodes. My conniving GPS had gone off grid, so I turned right when I was meant turn left and as a result I did a U-turn in Schibello's driveway - and practically drove straight into the cafe! If I had been allowed to, I would have parked there and snuck in for a sneaky cup of joe, but alas there was a big no parking sign. Actually this is only the negative of this cafe - the parking. During the week there basically isn't any really close to it. There are quite a few warehouse type business in the same street and I'm thinking that their staff have scored all of the street spots. So you might need to park in another street in the area or visit on a Saturday when hopefully this part of Rhodes isn't as busy, and enjoy a leisurely brunch with the family.
Next Door has a simple set up - an outdoor seating area (that is undercover) is full of lovely plants and recycled timber tables, and then there is a funky espresso bar inside the building, where you place your order. The outside space is very easy to access with a pram and you could quite easily park a few around the tables in case you want to meet up with some fellow pram owners (I didn't spy any high chairs although).
Once you have ordered, a member of the young and friendly staff will bring your meal to the table. The morning we dined there was only one other customer, so our food and coffee arrived really quickly. And trust me, these guys serve up some top notch coffee because they are located "next door" to the HQ of Schibello Caffee in Australia.
Apparently Schibello were the first importers of Italian espresso in Australia. At their Rhodes HQ they do everything from run the business, to roasting their own beans, hosting barista workshops and of course they have their sweet cafe. It's not all about coffee here although, as they have their own selection of tea (Paddington Tea), as well as some delicious looking iced teas, and other equally tempting cold drinks. All of which go perfectly with one of the treats that you find sitting on the front counter.
The coffees are served in the most gorgeous cups, oh and I should mention that babycinos are free with every coffee purchase! If you are just stopping by for a coffee and snack I can thoroughly recommend the zucchini, cheese & ham twists and a cookie for your bambinos. They do have a breakfast and lunch menu which sounds delicious and from photos that I've seen on Next Door's FB page, the presentation is fabulous. Some of the menu items are bacon & egg rolls, avo & fetta smash and pancakes drizzled with chocolate and served with a berry compote for breakfast. And at lunch time there are tempting sounding panini as well as beef burger with steak house chips, a chicken and quinoa salad and a pasta of the day. So whilst there isn't a specific kids menu there are quite a few things on the men that little humans will eat.
Next Door by Schibello is a great place to chillax in whilst you enjoy a superb coffee. It may not have all the bells and whistles of a full on kid friendly cafe, but you know what.....some times it's nice to be in a space that isn't crawling with children, because when you live and breathe them 24/7, you just need some time out x
