I've always seen the sign for the turn off to Medowie as we've hooned north up the Pacific Highway and wondered what if anything at all, was there. Well one day we decided to act a bit dangerously and we took that turn off (I think we had a spewing child that necessitated the detour) and we checked out Medowie, and we were surprised to find a great kid friendly cafe at the Medowie Macadamia Farm!
The Medowie Macadamia Farm has 12 acres of macadamia trees, as well as a cafe and shop that are open 7 days a week. Nuts from the farm are sold in the shop and also used in most of the meals served up in the cafe. Breakfast and lunch as well as coffee and sweet treats are available every day from 9am - 5pm.
There is plenty of parking as well as plenty of seating options at the cafe. The outdoor area is the best place to sit with kidlets as they have loads of room to move around. This area looks over the macadamia grove and you might even spy a handsome rooster strutting his stuff around the place. There is very easy access and space to park prams and you will also find the toilet facilities near the outdoor dining area. And just to let you know, you order your meals inside the cafe and a member of the young and friendly staff will then bring them to your table.
They really do look after children at the Medowie Macadamia Farm. When we visited at the end of 2015 there was a basic little kids play area set up on the grassy area just near the outdoor seating area. The boys had a great time pulling and putting this thing back together again. However recently they have built a pretty cool new play area, and I'm sure we will take the detour again to check it out - see below. This double cubby house will no doubt keep little people amused for quite a while so that you can enjoy a tasty meal from the cafe in relative peace.
When the kidlets get hungry, they can munch on a simple vegemite sandwich, melted cheesy fingers, Hawaiian pizza, nuggets & chips or egg in a nest ( a poached egg in a nest of toast). All of these items cost $6.50 or less. The kids meals come on melamine plates which gets a big tick from me. For drinks there is the usual range of milkshakes, juices and soft drinks and if you can afford it, the babycino costs $3.00!!
For sweet treats kids will love the house made macadamia ice cream that is on offer. It can come plain in a cone or as a sundae, and they also whip up ice cream spiders. There is a cake cabinet groaning with delicious and calorific looking baked goods too. And of course there are the chocolate covered macadamias that are for sale - these are seriously good and worth buying to nibble on if you are road tripping, or just to treat yourself with when the bambinos are in bed!
The big people's menu has both simple items such as sandwiches as well as full on cooked meals like the Macadamia Carbonara or the Warm Beef Macadamia Satay with Salad. The menu is reasonably priced for a tourist location, every meal is under $20.00 (our toasted foccacia cost $10.50 and a toasted sandwich cost $6.50). The meals are served up quickly and the sandwiches we ate were choc full of fillings and they hit the spot perfectly for a light lunch. They also have weekly specials and a decent selection of gluten free and vegetarian meals available.
Medowie Macadamias is definitely a great detour to take off the Pacific Highway, and as it is about 2 hours from Sydney it's the ideal spot to "stop, revive & survive". It is also a great place to visit if you are holidaying in the Port Stephens or Newcastle region. The kids will definitely be entertained and I think you will really enjoy the serenity of the farm x
