I've always risen early in the morning, I think it's a hangover from growing up on a dairy farm. So when the little bulls came along the early awakenings didn't really worry me too much. Actually before I had kids (and moved to the burbs) I used to get up early and go swimming at the pool in Prince Alfred Park in Surry Hills. It was a bit of a daggy old pool, nothing very flash, but it was clean and full of water and I loved my daily constitutional. So when I returned there a couple of weekends ago, boy did I get a surprise!
I should qualify here that I was actually back there to eat at the gorgeous Meadow Cafe which is at the Prince Alfred Pool instead of throwing on the speedos and doing a few laps (no wonder I haven't been able to get my pre - baby body back!!). The pool is very groovy indeed these days and as a lovely Mumma described it (who I was chatting to at the playground right next the pool and cafe) it is very Miamiesque.
Meadow cafe is at the entrance to the pool, it's the perfect spot for breakfast, lunch and coffee after a swim, or if you're not quite up to throwing on the speedos it's a lovely place to hang out whilst your kids are playing in the very cute playground.
The yellow theme from the brightly coloured pool umbrellas is continued into the stark interior of Meadow. The white tiled interior is quite small but there are loads of tables and chairs outside to make the most of sunny weather as well as high chairs for little bottoms to sit on.
The yummy menu has something for everyone, including a delicious kids menu. I love Meadow's logo of a woman diving through a frangipani, simple and understated just like Meadow is.
We ordered the little bulls sourdough with vegemite as well as the very delicious french toast brioche with caramelised banana and coconut ice cream (we all had to have a little taster of that one!). Babycinos are free with any order from the kids menu!
Mr Munch and I feasted on scrambled eggs on sourdough - they were nothing short of perfect, as was their proscuitto, egg and relish on brioche roll.
If you want something a bit lighter Meadow has freshly baked muffins, bikkies and cake at the front counter and this can all be washed down with some very delicious Campos coffee. At lunch time you can partake in trendy reuben sandwiches and brioche burgers.
After your tasty meal you can either go for a swim (or should you do it the other way around? My Mumma always told me never to eat and then swim as you would sink to the bottom of the pool), or go for a saunter around the park. Besides the cute playground near the cafe, you will also find swings and a very cool slippery slide which will entertain your kids for ages.
So dear parents, Meadow is the perfect cafe for these lazy, hazy summer days. Pop on down for some very yummy tucker, let your kiddliwinks run amok in the park and then pop into the pool to cool off. If you're not keen on squeezing into your speedos at the moment, then never fear as there is a great toddler splash area where your little ones can have lots of fun and you can hide away under your kaftan looking oh so Miamiesque (who cares what Ms Dinnigan thinks of us!!).
Meadow also operates a kiosk poolside if you want to sun bake whilst you sip your latte.
