On a gloomy day in Port Stephens everyone (tourists) batten down the hatches and don't leave their accommodation. But not team Little Munch, we have no fear (and a good set of tyres on our trusty old hyundai). So when visiting the area recently, we ventured to other side of the region from where we were staying, to the Longboat Cafe in Fingal Bay for breakfast - and we were the only diners!
The Longboat Cafe is located in the bottom of the Surf Life Saving Club at Fingal Bay. There is both indoor and outdoor seating and we obviously had to sit inside due to the weather. If you score a table outside on a fine day, your kidlets will be able to run around in the park next to the cafe. Otherwise for the inside diners there are colouring in books and pencils available to occupy little hands.
You can access both the inside and out with relative ease if you have a pram in tow. You can also put your little ones in a high chair, and if you need to use the facilities, the toilets are located just outside the cafe and they include a baby change table.
Kidlets have their very own menu at breakfast and lunch. For breakfast they can munch on either Eggs on Toast or Bacon on Toast for $7. For a heartier option they also offer Bacon & Egg on Toast or Sausage & Egg on Toast for $9.50. Our boys went with the Mini Longboat Pancakes with maple syrup & ice cream for $9.50 as well as Fruit Turkish Toast for $6.50. And let me tell you, the man on the pans certainly knows how to fry up some perfect pancakes, that's for sure! These little beauties were perfect in every way and the ideal size for small bellies.
At lunch time, the usual suspects feature (eg nuggets & chips) or your babes can just have a plain sandwich with their favourite filling or spread. Kids size milkshakes come in melamine cups and they also serve a babycino for $1.00. And I need to point out here how accommodating the staff are of little people. Our waitress fawned over the boys making sure they received their drinks and meals first and that they had enough pencils to share between them.
Let's move on to the grown ups - Mr Munch grew up eating a variety of offal based dishes - I did not. And to be quite frank, the thought of cooking or consuming anything offal based makes my stomach turn. So if old mate sees anything on the menu centring around the innards of an animal, he will be sure to order it. On the breakfast menu at the Longboat Cafe, they have the ye old favourite of Lambs Fry and Bacon (for you offal novices out there, Lambs Fry consists of a mix of things like testicles, liver, sweet breads, kidneys etc). Mr Munch rubbed his paws with glee when he saw this dish and it was dished up with poached eggs, grilled tomato and some sourdough.
I went for the polar opposite ordering the very vego Avocado Mash on sourdough. This was one tasty little dish that was sprinkled with pepitas and crumbled fetta, and I ordered a poached egg on top for some protein. There was a bit too much balsamic drizzled on top for my liking (I find it a bit too intense for the taste buds first thing in the morning), other than that, it was the perfect way to start the day.
If neither of these options tickle your taste buds I'm sure you will find something else that will, as there are about 20 different options on the breakfast menu! To wash it down you will need a coffee of course, and they brew up a fairly decent cup of Segafredo coffee. And in case you drop by at lunch time, you will find that the menu covers all of your cafe favourites, from burgers and sliders, to gourmet salads as well as gourmet pies and the like.
After your meal (if the weather is behaving), you can take the kids for a swim at the beach or let them have a play in the playground. There is a decent playground for kids to muck up in, on the other side of the park from the cafe. Outside tables actually have a decent view of it, so if your kids are a bit older or you are a true free range parenter, than this will be ideal for your kids - but just remember the beach is close by, so don't let kids wander too far away unsupervised.
So Little Munchers do you batten down the hatches when its raining on your holidays, or do you get out and explore like we do?
