On the road again, I can't wait to get on the road again....this Willie Nelson classic seems to be the motto of the Little Munch family - we love road trips. It also has to do with the fact that my family's farm is north of Sydney, so if we want to see the grandparents, we can't just pop around the corner or to the next suburb - we have to drive 4 hours!
As a result I have a very good list of cafes (and it does not include the golden arches) where we can get our caffeine fix en route. And a new addition to the list is the Greenhouse Cafe in Nabiac. Nabiac is a small village about 3 hours from Sydney. You may have zoomed past it on your travels thinking that there was not much there except a petrol station and a bakery (which by the way is also very good) as that is all you can see from the highway. So to discover how lovely this village is, you need to take the Nabiac exit off the highway. Drive around for a little bit and you will find the Greenhouse in the main street - just look for a lovely old weatherboard green house!
The Greenhouse Cafe has both indoor and outdoor seating available. The indoor seating is very spacious and has plenty of room and access for your pram. The outdoor seating area in the garden is probably the best spot to sit with kids who need to burn off a bit of energy after sitting still in the car for so long. Alas I only discovered this when I went to use the loos, so we sat inside. And the toilet facilities are lovely and clean, but they don't contain a baby change table. High chairs are available for bambino bums to sit in and the staff are all very welcoming and friendly towards little humans.
The Greenhouse cafe also doubles a small gift shop - which is perfect in case you forgot to bring a hostess gift for the people you may be staying with. There is a lovely range of jewellery and homewares, cards and some local food products, that you can browse through - just keep an eye on little hands just in case they abscond with something!
If you are stopping in for a caffeine fix and a sweet nibble, you are in for a real treat. The cake cabinet is full to the brim, with all sorts of delicious baked goods and their Merlo coffee is perfectly brewed. I'm not sure if it has to do with tree changers, or if it is just that we love good food and coffee in Australia, but every country town we visit these days serves up top notch fare and excellent coffee just like they do at the Greenhouse Cafe!
The menu at the Greenhouse Cafe would be at home in any city cafe, and contains items that both adults and kids will love. From corn fritter stacks with smoked salmon to healthy vego breakfasts with grilled haloumi, balsamic mushies, tomato and fritters, you are spoilt for choice at breakfast time. And the best bit? They come in big country size portions. And just to let you know, the menu prices are similar to what you will find in city cafes.
At lunch time kidlets have their very own menu. They can choose between flathead fillets or chicken nuggets and they are both served with chips and sauce. The meals cost $10.00 and include a juice popper. For bigger people there are healthy sounding gourmet salads, wraps, melts, fish & chips etc for you to choose from.
A lot of love came out of the Greenhouse's kitchen the day we dined and it also came from the charming staff who we dealt with. This is one cafe I will definitely be returning too and I'm also keen to check out their gorgeous Magnolia Tea House that is just around the corner and specialises in high teas! Check out their website here.
So my dear Little Munchers, next time you are heading North, I thoroughly recommend that you make the quick detour into Nabiac and visit the gorgeous Greenhouse Cafe. And if you need any other tips on where to stop heading out of Sydney, just drop me a line x
P.S. there is a playground just down the street from the Greenhouse, in Memorial Reserve - so you can always grab takeaways and head down there if your kids need some proper play time.
