Yet again my valuable Little Munch community has given me a red hot tip off about a great kid friendly cafe. And boy have team Little Munch fallen hard for this place - it's called Dear Delicious and you will find it in Dulwich Hill.
We ventured to this inviting corner cafe on a very wet and windy Sunday (as we woke to no power and my men folk wanted eggs and all I wanted was coffeeeeee). Now let me tell you, the coffee that they brew at Dear Delicious is worth travelling from the other side of Sydney for, rain hail or shine! They use Little Marionette beans and the coffee we had was sublime, the best I've had in Sydney in a long time (and I've had quite a few!).
Now let's start back at the beginning. Dear Delicious is located on busy Wardell Road, however there is parking available in front of the cafe. The morning we dined we easily scored a spot, as there weren't too many people out and about braving the weather like we were. This may not be so easy on a normal day however. Another option is to take public transport as both the Dulwich Hill train station, as well the light rail station are within easy walking distance of the cafe.
The cafe has both indoor seating, as well as a fabulous outdoor eating area that is in a garden like setting. Due to the poor weather conditions I couldn't safely take a photo of the outdoor area without being blown away, hence why I have "borrowed" the photo at the top of the review from Dear Delicious' FB page. Both areas are easily accessed with a pram and there is also space to park them near your table. I'm pretty sure that the outdoor area would be the perfect spot to meet up with your mums group too. There are high chairs for little bums as well as a baby change table in the toilet (this is inside at the back of the cafe). Bored kidlets can occupy themselves wandering around the garden checking out all the different herb and vegie patches, or they can partake in some colouring in or reading as there is basket of kids stuff inside the cafe.
There is a whimsical looking little kids menu at Dear Delicious, that has an option for breakfast as well as two items for lunch. For breakfast kids can have toast with spreads or a fried egg, plus a cold pressed juice for $7.95. The juice comes in a disposable cup with a lid and straw (big tick). My big boy was at first perplexed to see "black stuff" on his eggs, but when I explained that they weren't going to kill him he happily ate it all up. There is also a selection of freshly baked goods available, such as pain au chocolats and croissants which will also appeal to small appetites. At lunch time, kids under the age of 12yrs can munch on a Cheesy Beef Burger or Fish & Chips, both of which cost $9.95.
So you get that the kids are really taken care of, but what about their bleary eyed carers? Well we are most definitely too. I mentioned the first rate coffee already and the food is also top notch. At first we were a little thrown by the brekkie menu items - they are all quite fancy pants sounding, with words like "activated" and "sprouted" sprinkled through it. But as the caffeine started to soak into our blood stream and found its way to the old grey matter, we worked out that there were quite a few options that appealed to us. We decided on Gipsy Baked Eggs and Folded Folie Eggs - both meals were outstanding. The Gipsy was full of smokey eggplant & capsicum, bacon, eggs, chevre and it was finished off with a dusting of dukkah. It came with loads of crunchy toast which perfectly mopped up the bottom of the dish. The posh sounding Folded Folie Eggs were kind of like an omelette topped with smoked salmon and caramelised onion. They looked and smelled delicious, but were gobbled up too quickly by my other half, so I couldnt take a snap.
We just loved everything about this cafe and for us breeders it is brilliant that they open from 6am during the week and close at 4.30pm. This means we can get our caffeine fix first thing in the morning when it is desperately needed after a night of no sleep, and that we can take our little munchers there for a spot of afternoon tea after the school pick up too!
We left Dear Delicious in fine fettle, even though the weather was anything but, and we will definitely be back, but perhaps on a day when the sun is shining in down town Dullo so that we can have an explore of the outdoor area.
