We are Sunday drive kind of people. We love getting out of Sydney and discovering new places. The kids are in charge of spotting the playgrounds and I am in charge of spotting the cafes. Mr Munch is the designated driver who normally has to veer off the road at a moment's notice once either a playground or cafe have been spotted. Sometimes we get lucky and spot a cafe and a playground in one, just like we did when we were zooming past Custom Espresso in Speers Point not too long ago.
Custom Espresso is located right on beautiful Lake Macquarie. If you sit outside on the deck you can sit back and watch the view whilst your kids play in the small play area. There is play equipment and baskets of toys for them to occupy themselves with and as we were the only people brave enough to sit outside on the wintry day we visited, the boys had the whole area to themselves.
Now the play area isn't the only child friendly aspect of this gorgeous little cafe. There are high chairs and reasonably easy pram access as well as toilet facilities (no baby change table). They have a tasty little kids menu which is very reasonably priced - mini bacon & eggs ($7.50); pancakes with ice cream & maple syrup ($7.50); hot chips ($5); ham & cheese melt ($4); and raisin Turkish soldiers ($3). My favourite kid friendly aspect although is the adorable babycinos that are absolutely free!
And there is only way to savour a free babycino and that is pictured below:
For non babycino drinkers, kid sized milkshakes are $3.50 and served in a disposable cup, juices & soft drinks are $3.20 and they also serve an old fashioned fire engine for $4.00! Parents will be gleefully content when they down one of Custom Espresso's perfectly brewed Glee Coffee Roasters coffee. I have tried quite a few coffees in quite a few cafes around Lake Macquarie over the years, and I think I would have to say that Custom Espresso's brews are the best!
We were after a spot of morning tea/brunch when we dined and there were ample choices on the menu for all of us. We had a nice big thick slice of Pear & Raspberry Bread ($5.50), Raisin Turkish Toast ($3.00 kid size) and a Savoury Croissant ($10.50) with smoked leg ham, tasty cheese, tomato and relish on the side. They also make some amazing cakes and other baked goodies so make sure you check out the cake cabinet before you order.
The breakfast menu has some seriously delicious items on it - Sweet Potato Hash Browns with Poached Eggs, Spinach & Hollandaise or the Breakfast Bruschetta with Mushrooms Fried Halloumi, Cherry Toms, Bacon, Spinach & a Fried Egg atop toasted Pane de Casa would be my picks! Of course you can have the basics as well, so there is something for everyone at Custom Espresso.
If you land at lunch time (you can arrive by boat obviously being so close to the water!), you will find loads of salads, melts, wraps and burgers on the menu. The menu is priced from $9 - $19 which is reasonably priced considering the portion sizes and that they come with chunky steak fries - yum!
When you finish your little sojourn at Custom Espresso I would thoroughly recommend a walk along the foreshore of Lake Macquarie. If you and the kidlets are feeling fit enough you can make it all the way around to the amazing Speers Point playground, if not, just go and check out the view on the lakes edge and continue on your Sunday drive x
