Toowoon Bay is one of those sleepy little Australian coastal villages that triples in size every summer. It's an easy drive from Sydney - about 1.5 hours, depending on where you live and I dare say because so many Sydneysiders flock there come holiday time, an awesome (and oh so kid friendly) cafe called Coast89 exists there.
You have the option of sitting inside or out at Coast89, we chose the inside because the outside tables were taken by patrons seeking the beautiful spring sunshine. As soon as we sat down kids menus in the form of colouring pages as well as a cup of pencils were placed in front of our boys, they immediately busied themselves colouring in and we didn't hear a peep out of them until their lunch arrived - top marks Coast89!! A colouring in sheet that doubles as a menu is such a simple little gesture and also a great marketing idea for cafes to use. We now have it hanging on the kids art board in their bedroom and as I walk past it every day I'm reminded of what a great time we had at Coast89.
The kids menu is so cheap and it covers both breakfast and lunch nicely. My young lads went for the usual nuggets and chips - this intrigues me some what, as we eat out regularly and they still request the same thing whether we are at Maccas or a super posh cafe. Anyway it was a very decent size serve and they didn't finish off their individual serves, so if you have little kids you may only need to order one serve.
For drinks the boys had kid sized milkshakes ($3) that came in disposable cups and they of course serve a babycino. For adults their brew is Di Gabriel and as the cafe is fully licensed you can enjoy a wine, beer or cider with your meal. Table water was also given to us when we arrived - glasses for the adults and plastic cups for the boys - once again top marks Coast89. Actually the staff get top marks for their service for our entire meal.
The large size serves continued with our meals as well. The fish and chips were PERFECT and too much for Mr Munch too eat and my salt and pepper squid was cooked, well PERFECTLY! Tasty and crispy side salads finished off each meal. Every meal that passed our table looked so good. From Thai Beef Salads to Roast Lamb Sandwiches to the good old fashioned Coast Burger, there is something for everyone - even the Curry Lentil Burger looked and smelt amazing! Prices range from $13 - $18 for lunch time meals.
If you happen to be lucky enough to be holidaying or even living in Toowoon Bay you can dine at Coast89 on Friday and Saturday evenings. Prices for the adults menu do start to head north of $30 but if the meals are anything like what we had at lunch they will definitely be worth it. A couple of examples are Sage & Prosciutto wrapped Pork Fillets and Pan Roasted Spatchcock with leek, speck, white beans and sage butter - yummo! Oh and you can go back for breakfast from the family friendly hour of 7.30am.
As you would expect there is a very coastal ambience in the decor of Coast89. Aqua and white hues were everywhere from the furniture to the wall paper to the light fittings. There is an open kitchen so you can see and smell the deliciousness going on in the heat of the cafe. The loo facilities are excellent, complete with baby change table. There is a stack of high chairs for your little ones and there is access for your pram as long as you enter from the Toowoon Bay Rd doorway - the other entrance on Bay Rd had a couple of steps. The day we visited there was plenty of street parking available, although I can imagine this may not be in the case in the peak of summer.
After your meal at Coast89 you can check out some of the cute shops nearby or literally just head to the coast - keep heading east down Toowoon Bay Rd and stop when you see the sea! Enjoy x
