If you are a retro Mumma or Pappa who likes a bit of op shoppin', have I found the perfect cafe for you! The Bees Knees Vintage Cafe located on the wrong side of the tracks in Hornsby, is the place to go for all things boho. This sweet little cafe is a perfect little escape from the hustle and bustle of Hornsby but you need to hop over the other side of the tracks from the big Westfield to find it. At first glance you presume it is an op shop and not a cafe - racks of 2nd hand clothes are out the front with a few tables and chairs near them and the windows are full of bric a brac.
I think the only reason we ended up in the Bees Knees was that the little bulls had spied some old toys in the window and made a bee line (excuse the pun) straight for them. I followed them in curious, and then in came Mr Munch (grimacing) and then our very own Queen Bee (my Mumma) who was just about to board a train back to the farm. Once we were inside, I have to say we were all quite surprised by the Bees Knees, it is charming and quaint, serves quite good coffee and it is child friendly!
We sat down in some comfy lounges that were reminiscent of what would be in your great aunt's house and took in our surroundings. The little bulls had found a book case full of games, books and toys so they were taken care of. Mumma and I were drawn to the cake cabinet (like bees to a honeypot) and Mr Munch sat grimacing - he's not your op shop slash pre loved kinda guy.
You order and pay at the counter. The menu is on black board and whilst the selection is small, it all sounds tasty. A few items are suitable for breakfast and lunch, but most items are more for morning or afternoon tea. I was tempted to order Mr Munch a Pumpkin Milkshake as a bit of a joke, but saw that he was still grimacing so thought better of it.
Our coffee and cake was served very quickly and luckily it was all delicious, so Mr Munch stopped grimacing so much. Hummingbird cakes for the adults ($5 each) were moist and topped with a yummy cream cheese frosting and our coffee hit the spot. The food is served on mismatched china which adds to vintage charm of the cafe.
We ordered the little bulls a monster smartie cookie ($3.50) to share and the babycinos were literally the bees knees. There isn't a specific kids menu but you will find quite a few things available for them to eat.
The cafe is split into 3 sections - the front room is where you order and pay for your meals and there are quite a few tables and chairs - a very eclectic assortment may I add, and the walls and shelves are adorned with vintage wares, from handbags to jewellery to paintings to cake tins - everything you see and even sit on is for sale. The next room which is up a couple of steps is full of comfy lounges and seats for you to relax into whilst you have your coffee and gossip. From there you go out the back into the court yard. There is loads of seating out here and space for little ones to run amuck. The loo is also out here and a small family room which has a baby change table! Once again there are bits and bobs for sale as well as toys and books for kids to play with.
You aren't allowed to take your pram into either of the top 2 sections. There are signs everywhere saying "no prams" allowed. I presume this is a space issue or maybe an OHS issue - but not really sure why. So if you have your pram with you, your choice is either outside (note busy street if dining with toddlers) or sit in the shop front.
If you love a bit of retro chic, vintage charm and pre loved junk than you guessed it, make a beeline for the Bees Knees Cafe in Hornsby x
