Newington is a suburb of Inner West Sydney, located about 16kms west of the city centre. It is located on the mighty Parramatta River. Newington probably came to everyone's attention when it was used to house all of the athletes for the 2000 Sydney Olympics.
Newington today is home to many apartment blocks (because of the converted athlete's village) and is very well know amongst families because it is home to one of Sydney's best playgrounds (actually it is probably Sydney's best playground) - Blaxland Riverside Park. There are also excellent places to eat in and around the suburb. Newington also has a somewhat unusual neighbour - the Silverwater Correctional Complex (a fancy word for a jail), but don't let that put you off visiting this beautiful part of Sydney!
Many Thanks to Wikipedia (and my own local knowledge) for the Geography and History Lesson!
Little Munch Recommends
Armory Wharf Cafe - Located right on the Parramatta River and next to some excellent play equipment this cafe is a favourite amongst locals and visitors to the Blaxland Riverside Park. It has so many family friendly features so make sure you drop by when you are in the area next time.
Lemon Tree Cafe - You will find this delightful kid friendly cafe on the outside of the Newington Market Place. They serve up excellent coffee, lovely babycinos and consistently good fare. And the best bit is that there are toys to keep the kidlets happy!
Things to do with Kids In & Around Newington
- Enjoy a family day out at the Blaxland Riverside Park. The playground facilities are located all over the park so you don't feel as though you are too crowded. From an excellent water play area, to forts to climb and super duper swings, the whole tribe can have fun in this awesome park. There are cafes/kiosks on site, or BYO picnic as there are also BBQ facilities
- Another really good playground can be found not too far from the Newington Market Place in Pierre de Coubertin Park - the equipment is in excellent condition and the playground is no where as busy as its neighbour, the Riverside Park
- History Buffs Will love the Newington Armory where you can ride the rails of the historic railway on Sundays, and check out the latest art exhibition at the Armory Gallery
- You can also hire a bike and make use of the excellent bike paths along the river
